Single Review For Richard Spasoff
“First Look”
Composed and Performed by Richard Spasoff
Review written by Kerry Barnes
“First Look” Well I’m definitely getting my ‘first look’ at the wonderful ensemble grouping with a strong emphasis on violin and saxophone! I am taken back to my memories of childhood, experiencing a fun filled atmosphere at the fairground, but with a slightly spooky twist! A very synthy-world here with a feeling of changes in time and space, very slightly disorientating like a brocade embroidery on a dapper jacket, swirls painted like Vincent the famous artist. This track also sounds quite serious to me, like a strong faith worn in a necklace and deep in thought.
Richard, I think, has a passion for strong violin and sax work and they are always at the forefront of this work. The violin sounds gritty and scratchy, just like it should be, you can almost smell the resin flying off the bow!! The piano writing is a bit lower down in the pecking order on this one……but it is as smooth as a satin lapel, you just want to stroke it, in downward motion. Richard is also blessed with a gorgeous head of hair, all in black like the mood of this piece, such an artistic cohesion to the whole.
Little descending scales from the sax are quite lovely, and I am SO LOVING the little mini tubular-bells which are struck with such delicacy, one of my favourite instruments!! This track apparently is an ‘old one’ but is certainly up there with new vibes!! Now and again there are little diminuendos and you think the music is going to stop, but happily it’s Richard’s way of general phrasing. Now I hear some sparkling wine, bubbling at my lips, very tickly.
This continues for a while and keeps us interested as this track is quite lengthy at 5.11 mins duration. What stamina!! The violin work has a lot to say and I feel the conversation is bordering on ‘melancholy’ and ‘unrest’. Coming nearer to the end a bass guitar with little pressure points speaks quietly and guides us through a little harpsichord moment before fading gently away. Beautiful music from this man of many talents who is Richard Spasoff!!
