Single Review For Lisa Cullum
“E N D I N G S”
Composed and Performed by Lisa Cullum
Review written by Kerry Barnes
INTRODUCTION
I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing Lisa’s music for some time now, and feel like I’m delving into her core, deeper and deeper, bit by bit, and it feels wonderful!! This piece is in ‘loving memory of her father, William Arthur Elsegood’ a man who nurtured her love of music, William, we salute you!! “E N D I N G S” Singular piano notes introduce themselves, coming into the light from behind a cloud, pure and blue. Without knowing, a cello has been gently and patiently waiting, to seize the moment, now coming upon swift wings. They play sensitively and expressively to each other, just feeling the vibe as white feathers caress their symbiosis.
The rosin dusted cello begins to play in double-stopping mode, the art of playing more than one note at a time on a stringed instrument, and Lisa sprinkles her little piano snowflakes from above in pretty melodic-thirds. Gaining momentum, the deep waters of the cello sing with a clear and lingering vibrato, and firstly allow the beginning of the note to flat line before embracing. Lisa uses close family modulations which cement cohesion like a beautifully full-feathered dove in perfect motion. A different terrain opens up into a kaleidoscopic whirl, as Lisa’s piano writing blooms into rippling waters. A six note pattern taken from a broken chord reaches up and down and sounds like a heavenly harp.
Now Lisa inserts rising chromaticism in the bass, moving in semitones. Oh, now it’s breath taking, opening up and flies towards my face in pinks and purples, a shroud has enveloped me. Tender violins and violas play in 3 against 2, 6 against 4 and what a wise musical decision here from Lisa to choose the higher registered string family. The music has to die down now because we are at the top of an ‘inhale’ and cannot hold on much longer!! …….and as if by magic, a huge panoramic silent space is to dwell upon us, concentrating our minds to focus on the closing, lingering piano cries. No wonder Yellow Rose Records snapped this music up and we are grateful to team ‘Ibrahimovic, Eken and Karlidag for making this possible!!
Bravo Lisa!!
