Introduction
This is the second review I have written for this wonderful artist, who with her
minimalism gives us so much, particularly in this piece where we are
gifted trees, and forests!! Lisa is always so generous, none more so than
with her tireless work of supporting other musicians and their projects. As
soon as they put a post up on social media.......there’s Lisa with her kind and
encouraging words, and I know this personally!! Thank you dear heart.
“Beginnings”
My ears are ready!
Instant ‘tutti’, straight in, no messing about! Just two haunting notes have
me feeling beautifully bereft, devastatingly upsetting, no words for
it’s gorgeousness. Not often do I feel like that after just two notes. The
‘Yellow Rose Record Label’ are very lucky to have Lisa on their books.
The piano sounds like a ‘felt with added reverb’ and lovely to hear the
accompanying tiny machine workings of this awesome instrument.
Glorious string arranging, harmonised in 3rds and very much at the forefront
of this piece. Divine. Strong.
This whole sound world that Lisa has created lovingly washes over me,casting a spell as it rings true.
It’s maiden voyage envelopes me is pastel
shades of blue, pink, white, like a bird in first flight. It has begun. This is the ‘beginning’.
While spinning in this cool haze, I’m suddenly unaware of time, or the time
signature which I feel is a quadruple measure. Is Lisa playing tricks with my
sense of balance?? .......maybe there is a hint of spaced out irregularity?? .....or
maybe I could ask the white-winged messenger.
Little tails of descending melody lightl blow in the atmosphere, feathering at
the edges of elegant wisp. Full bodied string sections of the
orchestra sing their loudest song, wow this would make fantastic film music,
and I can just imagine sitting in the cinema while it blows a gale into my face!!!
A welcome ‘fermata’ allows me to exhale and catch my breath, beautifully
cadenced if I may say so. It moves in ‘continuum’ as we approach another
welcome......that of a Major-Tonality, so serene and comforting, and a
bowing cello certainly agrees with me! As we approach the Coda, formed in a
coral-constellation, Lisa’s filigree piano writing say’s to me “All ‘beginnings’
come to an End” and sound their best with a ‘Tierce da Picardy’ which is Lisa’s
gift here and something formed as far back as centuries. This aural experience
is topped off with little creaks of footwork, rather like when a
harpsichordist lets go of the keyboard at the end of a recital.
I really love this piece, and the journey
it took me on, thank you Lisa, so much!!
