Single Review For Bill Whitfield
“Evening Blues”
Composed and Performed by Bill Whitfield
Review written by Kerry Barnes
“Evening Blues” I really thank the Lord for delivering Bill from death into life on Feb 7th 2001, otherwise the world would have lost one of it’s most beautiful composer-pianists!! This glorious man feels a certain ‘service’ within his musical delivery and a definite responsibility towards his listeners. You are truly wonderful Bill Whitfield!! A night-blue haze greets me and cast’s a spell on this chord sequence from heaven. I’ts tempo is well controlled and the most perfect choice of repetition. I love the bright and resonant tones emanating from Bill’s gorgeous piano, it feels friendly and reassuring somehow.
I can’t help but feel that maybe Bill’s date with a beautiful woman, on a beautiful evening, is tinged with doubt as he stretches and pulls ‘triplets’ over ‘duplets’ in frustration…….and then to polarise with the most stunning held notes in one harmonic pedal, there are contrasts at play here!! My ears hear one dischordant note, as it hangs on for it’s brief life, pleading with Bill at the piano, saying ‘please don’t resolve me!’ The emotion in this track is plain to hear, and ‘mirrors around the room’ for all to see, and all the time the piano narrative increases. At 2.04 there are more ‘held-pedal’ harmonies but nothing compares to the very last notes that we hear, so ‘cantabile’ as Bill pours his heart out to us xx
Thank the Lord also for Bill’s devoted parents who nourished his musical talents from a young age and bought him a piano!! Thank you for your inspiring music Bill!!
