SINGLE REVIEW FOR
Attila Gibson
“Hidden Pain”
by Kerry Barmes
I’ve always thought that Attila’s piano music is
among the most powerful and explosive out
there, studded with true grit and dynamite!!,
and even though “Hidden Pain” is one of
Attila’s more ‘perhaps not quite so in your
face’ piano works, it still maintains the
essential hallmarks of this towering artist!!!!
Firstly, I’m struck by the sound of his piano of
choice for this particular piece. So many
evocative qualities are at play. The piano has
a gloriously old-fashioned timbre and sounds
like it’s being recorded in an echo-friendly
basement or something, but this is Attila’s
absolute intention. It’s as bright as a magpies
nest and very bold of course, as you would
expect.
There seems to be a lot of ‘anger’ within this
hidden pain, as he punches in all the accented
notes for us to adjust our ears to.
I’m getting a vision of a man in a terrible state
of panic and laced with pain, wandering the
streets in an absolute daze, very unsteady
and needing help. This daze is reflected in the
‘pedalling’ which seems intoxicated by reverb
and adds to the confusion.
The minor-tonality encapsulates every
emotion and whirls around like a million
guitar-harmonics!!
At around 1.30, the pressure starts to ease,
soaked in a haunting diminuendo. He lays us
to rest, but we are still restless.
Attila, you are an amazing communicator of
this uneasy feeling, and I think it’s gonna
follow me round all day, today!!!
What a MAN!!!!
